This cable between Belgium and the UK is the result of 10 years of work by Elia, Belgium’s electricity transmission network operator, and its British counterpart National Grid. Nemo Link is a 140 kilometers long double electrical cable, of which 130 km are submersed. A converter station is installed at each end, in Herdersbrug (between Brugge and Zeebrugge) and Richborough.
The cable allows to transport 1,000 MW of electricity in both directions, which is about the equivalent of a nuclear plant’s power.
The interconnection with the UK should contribute to the security of Belgium’s electricity supply, under pressure after several power failures were observed in Belgian nuclear plants. Our country will thus benefit from the UK’s wind farms’ production.
In the coming weeks, the cable will be charged, and tests will be conducted. It is scheduled to be put in service during the first quarter of 2019.
Our electricity network is already connected with France, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. An interconnection with Germany is being developed.
