Chances of Brexit “50-50” if the deal is rejected, according to a British MP

On Sunday, the British International Trade minister Liam Fox said he thought the chances of the UK still leaving the EU were “50-50” if the current deal was rejected.

Liam Fox has encouraged MPs to get behind the deal Theresa May and her European colleagues signed back in November. He said Parliament ratifying the deal was the only way to be “100% certain” that Brexit would happen on the 29th of March 2019.

“If we don’t vote for this bill, it’s 50-50 whether Brexit will still happen”, he told the Sunday Times.

The government is currently trying to convince MPs to sign the bill, but it doesn’t have the support of the majority. The deal has disappointed fervent “Brexiters”, who are worried that the UK might be stuck in the EU permanently. Europhiles are still hoping Brexit won’t happen.

Theresa May cancelled a vote on the 11th of December at the last minute, as she knew her deal would be defeated. The vote has been pushed back until the third week of January.

If the bill is rejected, “I think it would break the trust between the electorate and Parliament”, Liam Fox said. He has been a Brexiter for a long time. “That would take us into unknown territory with unpredictable consequences”.

“The only thing that would break the trust between the electorate and Parliament is ministers like Liam Fox refusing to trust voters by giving them the last word on Brexit”, says Liberal-Democrat Layla Moran, who wants a new Referendum.
