The rally is organised by groups such as Act For Climate Justice, 350.org Belgium, ADES Network, Tout Autre Chose, and Hart Boven Hard, with support from Greenpeace Belgium and Climate Express.
“The aim of the rally is to become visible to the closest level of authority and thereby spark ambitious, socially just actions on climate and, more precisely, demand a law on climate,” the organisers stated. “We wish to make this encounter a moment of discussion in which everyone can write proposals for inclusion in a socially just law on climate that matches the level of required radical changes announced by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.”
The place chosen for the demonstration is located in a neutral zone, where all demonstrations are prohibited. However, “there is no neutral climate zone,” the organisations responded.
“There is an emergency and the political leaders in the Government are not up to it. When Charles Michel declares that climate will be one of his priorities, we see that as an announcement effect. It’s actions that count and, in this domain, Belgium does nothing and only hides behind institutional excuses to justify its paralysis,” they argue.
