Consumer confidence fell in December to its lowest level in two years, weakened by the general economic prospects in Belgium, the National Bank of Belgium (BNB) announced on Monday.
Confidence levels fell by -5 points in December after slipping by -1 point in November. In October it had increased by 1.
“Consumers expect a considerable deterioration of the general economic situation over the next 12 months,” the bank said. “To a lesser extent, there is also heightened fear of an increase in joblessness.”
Households’ forecasts about their financial situation did not change in December, but they expect, however, to earn less in the next 12 months.
