Death of mathematician Jean Bourgain

Belgian mathematician Baron Jean Bourgain died at Bonheiden (Antwerp province) hospital on the 22nd of December, his family have told the Belga agency.
He was 64 years old. 

Jean Bourgain was born in Ostende in 1954 and was one of the world’s leading experts in his field. He taught at the VUB, Illinois University and the Institute of Higher Scientific Studies in Bures-sur-Yvette near Paris. 

He became one of the eight members of the prestigious School of Mathematics at Princeton’s research laboratory in New Jersey in 1994. 

Jean Bourgain was recognised for his work on Banach spaces and was made a Baron in 2015.
