European Film Awards 2018 – "Girl" the conqueror!

by editor December 15, 2018
December 15, 2018
“Girl,” Lukas Dhont’s first full-length feature, will compete in three categories (Best Film, Best Actor and European Discovery Award) tonight in Seville (Spain) at the 31st European Film Awards ceremony.
The colors of Belgium will also be defended by other productions and co-productions in the sections “Entertainment,” “Short Film,” and “Audience Award.”

In the “Best Film” category, “Girl” is contending with “Border,” by Ali Abbasi, “Dogman,” by Matteo Garrone, “Happy as Lazzaro,” by Alice Rohrwacher, and “Cold War,” by Pawel Pawlikowski.

Its main actor, Victor Polster, who is the youngest nominated for a European award since Jamie Bell in 2000 for her role in “Billy Elliot,” will try to be distinguished as best actor. He will be opposed in particular to Marcello Fonte (Best Actor Award at Cannes for his role in “Dogman”) and Tomasz Kot (“Cold War”).

Moreover, Lukas Dhont’s film, which tells the story of Lara, who dreams of becoming a prima ballerina, while being born in the body of a boy, is also part of the six nominees for the European Discovery Award.

Besides “Girl,” the Belgian co-production “Another Day of Life” is among the four animated films selected for the European Film Awards 2018. Directed by the Spaniard Raúl de la Fuente and Polish Damian Nenow, and world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May, it will compete with “Croc-Blanc,” by Alexandre Espigares, “Cro Man,” by Nick Park, and “Parvana,” on childhood in Afghanistan, by Nora Twomey.

In the “Comedy” section, Belgium will be represented by the Franco-Anglo-Belgian film “The Death of Stalin,” by Armando Iannucci, co-produced in Belgium by The Cinema Society and Panache Productions.

In the “Short Film” category, three Belgian films are among the selected: “Kapitalistis,” by Pablo Muñoz Gomez, “Lâchez les chiens,” by Manue Fleytoux, and “Wildebeest,” by Nicolas Keppens and Matthias Phlips.
