Interpol warns of a second wave of terrorism in Europe

Various countries could experience a second wave of terrorism, or a “Daesh 2.0,” Interpol Secretary General, the German Jürgen Stock, warned on Wednesday in Paris.
Many fighters from the so called Islamic State terrorist organization were sentenced to relatively short sentences because they could not be linked to specific attacks.

“This generation of jihadists will be released in the coming years,” Mr. Stock said. Many of them will manage to integrate into society. But prisons often provide fertile ground for radical ideas, as again demonstrated in the Strasbourg attack, the expert said.

If IS is defeated geographically, these people could try to reach regions such as Southeast Asia or Africa, he predicted. Others could also stay in Europe to carry out terrorist attacks.
