One in 40 Belgians helped by the 11,300 Red Cross volunteers

Belgium’s Red Cross disclosed on Tuesday, on the eve of International Volunteering Day, that it has some 11,300 volunteers within the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.
Their action benefits one Belgian in 40, it said.

The volunteers place their skills, time and energy at the service of others, particularly poor, vulnerable persons.

Of the 11,300 volunteers on whom the Francophone Red Cross can call, 5,100 work in emergencies, 4,300 help the neediest Belgians, 1,300 tend to blood donors, 1,200 assist asylum seekers and 500 provide first-aid training. About 10% of them have been active within the organisation for 20 years now.

The Red Cross has some 11 million volunteers worldwide.
