Orange selects Brussels as first Belgian city to receive 5G

Orange Belgium has selected Brussels as the first city in Belgium where it will deploy the fifth-generation mobile network, 5G, the company’s director announced on Wednesday.

Director Michael Trabbia made the announcement on Wednesday, on the margins of the Hello Show in Paris, where Orange presented many of its innovations.

Belgium, along with France, will be among the first European countries where the 5G technology will be rolled out. According to Orange, this decision was made possible by an accord between the Brussels Government and mobile telephone operators that enabled the development of the state-of-the-art mobile network in the capital.

It was later decided to review emission standards upwards, from the current six volts per metre to 14.5 volts per metre, without which it would have been impossible to deploy 5G in Brussels and another city would have had to be selected, as the operators have repeatedly stressed.

Orange now needs to begin selecting suppliers and preparing licenses, followed by the rollout in 2019 and commercialisation of the 5G service in 2020.
