“Yellow vests” to hold rally in Brussels on Friday

A “gilets jaunes” (Yellow Vests) rally is to be held in Brussels on Friday 30 November, the spokeswoman of the Brussels Capital-Ixelles police precinct, Ilse Van de Keere, told Belga News Agency on Monday after a meeting between municipal authorities and the rally’s organiser.
Participants will assemble from midday on Friday at the Cinquantenaire Park and move off at 1 p.m. towards Rue de la Loi, passing through the Schuman Roundabout. A delegation of “Yellow Vests” should then be received by Prime Minister Charles Michel, according to the police spokeswoman.

The Brussels police are warning motorists to avoid the area as much as possible on Friday and to opt, wherever possible, for public transport, Van de Keere stressed.

Belgium’s Gilets Jaunes, who have been inspired the protesters in France, are demonstrating mainly against the high cost of living and fuel prices.

Hitherto limited to the south of the country, the movement now seem to be spreading gradually to Flanders. Its agenda for this week includes a protest from 4 p.m. today in the centre of Genk, demonstrations tomorrow, Tuesday, in Hasselt and Herentals, and a protest planned for various locations in the province of Limburg on Saturday.
