The 15th edition of the Brussels’ PrideFestival will give special attention to intersectionality problems in the LGBTQ community from 2 to 19 May.
The intention is to give visibility to LGBTQ people who face several kinds of discrimination, like racism, sexism and ableism. To illustrate the intersectionality of these problems, the artist on the poster, Jaouad Alloul, who is both Moroccan and gay, was chosen to perform at this year’s event.
The central slogan of the Festival this year is #AllForOne, chosen by the three regional branches of Belgian’s LGBTQ community, RainbowHouse Brussels, Arc-en-Ciel Wallonia and Flanders’ çavaria.
In anticipation of the 2019 regional and federal elections, RainbowHouse Brussels has drawn up a list of demands that aim to make Belgium a champion of equality. Despite the legislative gains that have been made in the last few years, there are still many challenges to overcome regarding equality and access to LGBTQ rights.
Additionally, this year is the 50th anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall riots, which were the beginning of the current LGBTQ movements all over the world.
The original aims of the Brussels PrideFestival remain the same: to give visibility to LGBTQ talent in and around Brussels, create connections between different worlds and communities and offer safe spaces where people can build a fairer society together.
This year’s edition bundles politics and art in the form of music, expositions, movies, parties, drag performances and other discoveries.
