2018 was fourth warmest year since 1850

The last four years were the warmest on record since the Industrial Revolution.
The year 2018 probably scoops fourth place, according to a report published on Thursday by the American research group, Berkeley Earth.

The average global temperature was 1.16°C higher than the average temperature in the second half of the 19th century, analysts believe. The period coincided with the beginning of industrialization in Europe.

“The average global temperature in 2018 was lower than in 2015, 2016 and 2017, but warmer than every year observed before 2015,” indicates the report.

The year 2016 was the warmest year during the historical observation period,” continues the independent research group. The group says that the general trend is consistent with “long-term global warming.”

The data used are coming from 20,000 weather stations, states Berkeley Earth.

The American government usually carries out a similar analysis, but the partial shutdown of the federal administration, since December, has prevented the exercise for now.

Another group of researchers in Europe, the Copernicus Climate Change Service, published a similar analysis on 7th January, confirming that the last four years had been the warmest ever recorded.
