More land is being developed year after year, according to land-use figures published by Statbel on Friday.
“Developments and related projects” occupied 655,734 hectares in 2018: that’s 55,000 hectares more than 2008 and nearly 100,000 hectares more than 20 years ago.
These developments are mainly residential (272,172 hectares, 25,000 hectares more than 10 years ago). An impressive 215,555 hectares was being used for transport and communication in 2018: 18,000 hectares more than 10 years ago.
Agriculture took up 1,353,769 hectares of land in 2018, which is 44% of the total surface area. The area of cultivable land has been increasing since 2015. Forest and woodland covered 604,639 hectares in 2018, around 20% of the total surface area. This is a slight drop compared to 10 years ago.
