Air traffic controllers resume work as normal

by editor
The air traffic controllers at the air navigation and traffic service provider Skeyes (formerly Belgocontrol), which ensures air traffic safety in Belgian airspace, resumed work as normal on Wednesday morning.
The decision came after several hours of turning points during Tuesday night and the early Wednesday morning, said the Skeyes Communications Manager, Dominique Dehaene, also speaking on Wednesday morning.

When the announcement of the discontented air traffic controllers’ strike came just the day before, his surprise and lack of understanding of the situation were Dehaene’s main thoughts, he said.

It is true that work resumed as normal at Skeyes, where the last work stoppage (from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. today) affected Charleroi airport, and was scheduled to end at 8 a.m. That having been said, the action was set to have knock-on effects on passengers during the remainder of Wednesday, notably in Charleroi.

At Liège Airport, where the predominant activity is cargo-based, passenger flights will be unaffected by the strike action. There is only one arrival and departure passenger flight to and from Alicante in Spain planned for Wednesday, these flights being expected during the afternoon.

There was no news of potential further contact between the management and trade unions, other that already scheduled, indicated the Skeyes Communications Manager around 10.30 a.m. on Wednesday. “The consultation process as to the trade union grievances was ongoing,” he had said on Tuesday. A meeting was scheduled for next Monday to discuss these, further said Dehaene.
