Prime Minister Charles Michel said on Monday that he would like foreign Jihadis detained in Syria, including Belgians, to be tried in the region, and mentioned the possibility of creating an ad hoc international jurisdiction.
The Belgian Prime Minister said he was fully in favour of trials within the Middle East while recognizing that the situations in Syria, where Arab and Kurdish fighters backed by the Coalition have been battling remnants of the ISIS terror group, and in Iraq, led by an internationally recognized government, were different.
Speaking at a press conference after a meeting in Brussels with the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, he also called for a European or even international approach to the issue of the return of “Foreign Terrorists Fighters” (FTF).
We can think of “a form of international justice,” added the head of the outgoing Belgian government, who said, however, that he wished to take into consideration the security of Belgium’s population.
Former Interior Minister Jan Jambon also commented on the issue, saying that “the best thing would be to leave them where they are and withdraw the Belgian nationality from those with dual nationality.”
