Climate demonstration in Liege on Thursday

The Liege chapter of Youth for Climate (Y4C) and Students for Climate (S4C) have come together to organise a new protest on Thursday in favour of ambitious climate policies.
All students from primary to university are invited to take part and make their voices heard, according to Augustin, one of the students coordinating the action.

On 31 January, some 15,000 students had gathered on the esplanade of the Gare des Guillemins train station in Liege to demand strong measures in favour of the climate. A subsequent protest, held on 7 February outside the Liege city hall drew just 250 young people, but with the support of the S4C, the organisers say they mean to keep up their fight.

On Thursday, the demonstrators will assemble at 1:30 p.m. at the Esplanade des Guillemins. “As during the 31 January demonstration, we shall form a procession that will start at 2:00 pm and follow the same route towards the Place du March, opposite City Hall,” Augustin explained. “We should be there by 4:30 p.m. and disperse from there.”

It will again be a Green walk since the demonstrators will carry garbage bags to make the streets cleaner. If the mobilisation seems to be losing momentum, that’s mainly because school heads are less flexible now, the youths say.

“Minister Schyns sent an email to all school managements telling them they must enforce the regulations, starting by noting the days of absence,” Augustin explained. “She also suggested designating a delegation of students rather than letting the entire student body take part in the demonstrations. That clearly shows she wants to put an end to the movement.”

“The message remains the same,” stressed the young Liege student. “We want politicians to stop passing the buck, to one another or to the citizens, and to decide at last to pursue a real, ambitious policy in favour of the climate.
