Danger from WWI bombs in the North Sea is still "fake news" says Mayor of Knokke

Knokke-Heist is not worried about leaks of hazardous content from First World War explosives off the coast of the beach, despite recent reports, said Mayor Leopold Lippens.
According to Het Laatste Nieuws, an ammunition cemetery containing about 35,000 tons of bombs and grenades in the North Sea – long considered safe – could now show signs of leaks of dangerous materials.

The latest inspection conducted by the FPS Public Health on the site in question, submerged near the coast at Knokke, revealed leaks of the dangerous contents of the explosives, reports le Soir.

“The story reappears every year, but for the moment it remains fake news, said Lippens. “If there is no danger, the ammunition must stay there,” he added.

There are dozens, if not hundreds, of ammunition cemeteries in the North Sea, especially along the French coast. Why would there suddenly be a problem in Knokke, added Lippens.

“If research shows leaks, the government will have to take responsibility,” said Governor Carl Decaluwé. The ammunition cemetery will have to be dealt with “sooner or later,” he added.
