Through its participation – not for the first time – the City of Brussels “wishes to show that it responds to the concerns expressed by citizens,” City Hall said. It added that while Saturday’s outage was a symbolic response, municipal administration services have constantly been taking energy-saving measures such as insulating social housing, installing solar panels in schools, improving the energy efficiency of vehicles and greening city streets.
“All these are actions confirming that our communes have many ways of fighting climate disruption,” it said.
Countless sites, monuments and buildings worldwide will be participating in Earth Hour on Saturday night from 8.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. local time. They include Shanghai Tower, Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong, Dubai’s Burj Khalifa Tower, Red Square, the Acropolis, the Eiffel Tower, the Egyptian Pyramids, St. Peter’s Basilica, Big Ben, Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, and UN Headquarters in New York.
