Elections 2019: “intelligence must capture any possibility of interference”

The President of Comité R, which controls the operation of state security and the general intelligence and security at military level, will be highly mindful to the possibility of external interference during the forthcoming elections, due to take place on 26 May.
The President explains the position in an interview, published on Wednesday in the Sudpresse publications.

“In relation to the general context of the forthcoming elections, I will be particularly mindful of the methods used for information and intelligence gathering. We will see how the law in the sphere is applied,” guarantees Serge Lipszyc. He is referring to the external interference seen during the American elections, without specifically mentioning any given nationality.

The President goes on, “We will see if, in Belgium, we have the tools to ensure that the elections take place entirely smoothly. During 2019, it will be necessary for intelligence services to capture every possibility of external interference likely to alter the election result. Owing to “fake news”, there is a risk of seeing the state being undermined in this way. Hence the reason for our two intelligence services and Comité R being both worried and conscious of what is at stake here.”
