European Commission to commemorate 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda

Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development Neven Mimica will be in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, this weekend for Kwibuka 25, the commemoration of the 25 years since the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.
Kwibuka means “to remember” and describes the annual commemoration of the genocide in April – June 1994 when about 800 000 people were killed while the UN and the outside world passively looked on.

While not directly involved in the genocide, EU member states might have facilitated the killings. During its colonial rule of Rwanda, Belgium issued identity cards where ethnicity was indicated. Before the genocide, France exported weapons to the Hutu-led Rwandan regime.

On Sunday 7 April in the morning, Juncker and Mimica will participate at a wreath-laying ceremony in the Kigali Genocide Memorial, followed by the commemoration ceremony at the Kigali Convention Centre.  Juncker will also hold a bilateral meeting with President Kagame.
