Flanders sets aside 0.5 billion euros for drainage, pure water

by editor April 10, 2019
April 10, 2019

The Flemish Government announced on Wednesday that it had released 0.5 billion euros in funding for a multiannual plan aimed at further developing drainage and water purification in Flanders.

While the number of Flemish householders linked to a water purification system has doubled in 20 years, waste water from one in every eight households still re-enters the environment without any treatment.

To meet existing European regulations, Flanders needs to retreat waste water generated by half a million residents, at an estimated cost of four billion euros. The last deadline for that has been set at 2027.
