Two researchers at Flemish universities have been listed in the European section of Forbes magazine’s 30 Under 30 list for medicine and the sciences.
The business magazine annually compiles a list of the world’s richest people, as well as lists of the 30 most influential people under the age of 30 in various disciplines.

In the section for entertainment, the film director Lukas Dhont features. His feature debut released this year, Girl, tells of a transgender ballet dancer, won numerous awards and was nominated for a Golden Globe. The entertainment list also includes Spiderman star Tom Holland, musician Jess Glynne and Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe, still only 29.

The section Science and Medicine lists Dr Hannelore Bové (photo), a post-doctoral researcher at the university of Hasselt, nominated for her work in detecting soot particles – a component of air pollution produced by diesel engines among other things – in human blood and urine samples.

“This way we can gain an insight into how much our bodies take up this pollutant, and what the effects are on our heath,” she said.

Dr Bové, aged 28, was last year named among the Top 5 researchers of 2018 by the British magazine New Science.

In the same category features Angelique Van Ombergen from the university of Antwerp, whose research looks at how the human body reacts to space flight, and how humans might adapt to life on other planets. Her work involves studying the brains of former astronauts, and by living herself in a replicated Martian environment. She is currently employed by the European Space Agency as Science Coordinator for Human Research.
