Originally, the plan was to make 100-120 employees in Belgium redundant as part of the Swedish furniture company’s global restructuring plan. The main HQ and the human resources departments in the various stores will be most affected. The number of job losses was fixed at 115 following negotiations. But 106 new positions will be created at the same time, as IKEA wants to centralise the management of its personnel and move it to a new service centre at Zaventem.
The management’s offer is the fruit of months of negotiations. It contains concrete measures for those that leave the company and tells personnel whose jobs are under threat how to apply for the new positions. Unions say that it is an offer from the management and not a pre-agreement between management and employee representatives.
