Kinepolis blames lack of blockbusters for drop in attendance

by editor
Cinema operator Kinepolis attracted 8.8 million visitors to its cinemas in the first quarter of 2019, a 6% drop compared to the first three months of 2018, it announced on Wednesday.
This decline is in part caused by the absence of big blockbusters but also by a particularly strong first quarter in 2018.

However, the release of the “Avengers: Endgame” has already made it possible to set “unprecedented records and in the meantime compensated for the weaker first months of the year”, the group said.

The decline in the number of visitors in the first quarter was particularly substantial in Belgium (-23.5%), Switzerland (-19.4%) and Luxembourg (-6.3%).

Kinepolis’ revenue, on the other hand, is up thanks to higher revenue per spectator in all countries, in tickets, snacks and drinks.

Kinepolis operates a total of 97 cinemas in Belgium (11), France (12), Spain (8), the Netherlands (17), Luxembourg (3), Switzerland (1), Poland (1, rented to third parties) and Canada (44).
