Organ tribute takes place in Brussels

by editor February 1, 2019
February 1, 2019
After the first Brussels organ festival, which attracted 2,500 visitors in February 2017, the “This is not a Pipe…Organ Festival” now returns for the second time.
It opens this Friday and will reverberate around the city until Monday evening. Organised by the charity Brussels City of Organs and ECHO (European Cities of Historical Organs), the purpose of the event is to enable Brusselers to discover the richness of the capital’s heritage, Brussels itself having no less than 165 organs.

During the course of the next four days, 13 events will take place owing to the participation of 23 organists, both those renowned and yet to be discovered, in 10 different locations. These range from the Cathedral of Saints Michael and Gudula to the Chapel Royal (the Protestant church in Brussels), also taking in the Halles Saint-Géry (the Brussels history and culture centre).

“Master-classes” will be provided by European expert organ players to Belgian students, but also other students coming from Germany, Portugal, Italy, the Netherlands and France.

The opening night is scheduled for Friday in the Cathedral of Saints Michael and Gudula, taking the form of a concert with three organs.
