Over 20,000 Flemish people are not allowed to drive where and when they want

An increasing number of Flemish people is only allowed to drive under certain conditions, according to Via Institute.
Cara, the driving suitability centre and part of Vias Institute, looks into when people are medically unfit to drive, and become a danger on the road. “It is always important to find the right balance between ensuring public safety and allowing someone to operate safely in traffic,” said spokesperson Stef Willems to Het Nieuwsblad.

“Nine out of ten people who turn to Cara can, with imposed restrictions, continue driving safely in traffic. We give drivers a paper that they have to take to the town hall after they have passed some tests. With that paper, they receive a new driving license. That way, police agents can immediately see the imposed conditions by the codes on the license,” he added.

The number of people with a complicated problem keeps increasing, according to Cara. Over 10,000 Flemish people are not allowed behind the wheel without glasses or contact lenses. 12 people are officially in error if they do not wear their eye patch. 2,345 people in Flandres are not allowed to even have one drink and 29 risk a fine if they attach a trailer to the back of their car.

“The most common problem is people who are in wheelchairs or that do not have a good sitting balance, or cannot use their hands and arms to their full extent,” Willems added.
