Pilot project sees Brussels Airport hire 6 employees with autism

A pilot project which has employed six people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to work at Brussels Airport is reporting positive results.
Since February, security firm G4S has been employing six people to be responsible for the x-ray screening of bags at the airport, a job tailored to their needs, said G4S Belgium.

The pilot project is supervised by TRplus/Passwerk, an organisation that deploys people with autism in various sectors, including ICT, and provides job coaching for its employees.

“It is not always easy for people with ASD to find a job on the regular labour market. Functions such as baggage screening at the airport are, however, well suited to their needs,” says Nico De Cleen of TRplus/Passwerk.

The prospective screeners have gone through an extensive recruitment procedure in recent months. In addition, G4S and TRplus/Passwerk, together with Brussels Airport, have provided a quiet working space away from the typical bustle of the airport.

The pilot project seems to be a success. “The first weeks of our new employees already show that they have all the qualities to quickly master the screening process”, says Jean-Paul Van Avermaet of G4S Belgium.
