Protest calling for the end of nuclear power in Belgium will take place in Brussels on the 26th of April

There will a protest calling for the end of nuclear power in Belgium on the 26th of April.

The protest will take place near the Gare du Nord in Brussels, between 3pm and 5pm. The day was chosen to commemorate the 33rd anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. The protest has been authorised by Brussels authorities, according to Brussels-Ixelles police spokesman Olivier Slosse. The request has not yet been granted in the Schaerbeek commune, but it is well underway, said Francis Leboutte. Mr Leboutte is president of the “Fin du nucléaire” association.

The protesters will meet at the Gare du Nord at 3pm and head to the Engie-Electrabel HQ at 4pm. After arriving, they will lie on the ground for a minute to evoke the consequences of a nuclear accident. The start and end of the protest will be signalled by a siren and a megaphone.

The organisers do not have an estimate for how many people will attend. There will a similar protest at the same time in Cologne, but a number of Germans are also expected to attend the Brussels protest.

This protest has been organised by the “Fin du nucléaire” and Réveil Anti-Nucléaire” associations, as well as director Bouli Lanners.

The organisers are worried about the fact that two reactor’s tanks have thousands of cracks and another three reactors are over 40 years old. They say this means there is a high chance of another major nuclear accident like Chernobyl or Fukushima. They want the five most dangerous Belgian reactors to be shut down.
