About 70,000 persons of all ages braved bad weather on Sunday and took part in a march through the streets of Brussels, organised by the Rise for Climate organisation to press politicians to adopt measures to protect the climate.
The huge procession left the Gare du Nord at about 1:30 p.m. and arrived outside the European parliament just after 3 p.m.
“Humanity is facing the biggest ever challenge of its existence on Earth,” the organisers told the crowd. “We absolutely need to make the leaders bend. We shall step up our actions. Radicalism has become a necessity.”
This is the second such march in less than two months: on 2 December last, 65,000 persons – according to the police – demonstrated in the streets of the capital for the same reasons.
And since the start of this year, students have been mobilising for climate, holding demonstrations each Thursday to press political decision-makers to urgently adopt ambitious climate-friendly measures.
