Tourism: It’s all about water in Wallonia this year

by editor March 12, 2019
March 12, 2019
Tourism activities in Wallonia will centre on the theme of water in 2019, regional Tourism Minister René Collin announced on Tuesday at Spa, the cradle of thermalism.
The year’s activities will be launched officially at the Place d’Armes in Namur on the 30th of March with a wide range of activities, including a mobile sauna, a fishing simulator and a water show.

Subsequent attractions will include the Réveil du Lac de Bambois, a major family festival linking nature, culture and tourism at Fosses-la-Ville on 7 April, followed by the Namur Marathon along the Meuse on 12 May and the Triathlon des Lacs de l’Eau d’Heure on 1 and 2 June.

Other offerings include a meal on the water and a weekend at the waterside at La Louvière on 6 and 7 July.

Visitors to the region will be able to enjoy the pleasure of being on, in or near the water in myriad ways, whether on bicycle, on foot, in a kayak or a barge, in a swimsuit or nightgown, at the table, on the terrace or under an umbrella.

Under a project aimed at the recognition of thermal cities as part of the world’s heritage by UNESCO, the city of Spa is joining the Communauté des Accros du Peignoir (Community of Fans of the Peignoir), a movement aimed at vitalising the image of thermal stations through rejuvenated tones and codes of communication.

Created in 2016, the movement makes multiple appearances in various parts of the world, mixing reality and the imaginary, creation and humour.

The city of Spa has signed on to this initiative, and to the general thrust of the Walloon region, with a view to being included in June 2020 among the Great Water Cities of Europe recognised as part of the UNESCO World Heritage.
