Utrecht to remain at highest threat level until 'at least' 22:00

by editor
The threat level in Utrecht will remain at its highest level, the fifth, until at least until 22:00, the National Agency for Security and Counterterrorism (NCTV) announced Monday.
“Shootings took place this morning in several locations in Utrecht,” NCTV Director Pieter-Jaap Aalbersberg said at a news conference in The Hague, adding that a major police operation had been launched to find the shooter. The incident was being treated as a potential terrorist attack.

International media quoted Utrecht Mayor Jan Van Zanen as saying that three people died in the attack, and that police were looking for a 37-year-old Turkish national.

The Dutch national agency for security and counterterrorism justified this decision to extend the threat level by the fact that the perpetrator of the shooting is still at large. In addition, the measure will ensure the public stay vigilant.

Level five is considered as “critical: a terrorist attack in the Netherlands is expected imminently.”
