Vilvoorde wants speed limit of 90 km/h on entire Brussels Ring

The city of Vilvoorde wants the maximum speed limit on the Brussels Ring to be uniformly limited to 90km per hour, all along the route, and demands drastically strengthened speed checks.
“The current regulations, which allow for different speeds of up to 70 km per hour to Forest, then 120 km per hour and then 90 km per hour on the Vilvoorde Viaduct, lead to stop-start traffic across the whole motorway stretch,” said the mayor of Vilvoorde, Hans Bonte (sp.a) according to Belga.

“These kinds of situations lead to many traffic accidents. A uniform speed regulation is not only more comprehensible for drivers, it also undeniably allows for better traffic flow and the reduction of CO2 emissions,” he added.

Since Wednesday, the Flemish Agency for Roads and Traffic (Agentschap Wegen en Verkeer) has set up a limit of 70 km per hour on the 13 km stretch between the regional border with Wallonia and the Forest bend, due to works to renew the existing street lighting with LED technology. Additionally, the safety rails were replaced by concrete elements.

Over the course of the works, noise barriers will be placed over a distance of 3,2 km between Beersel and Drogenbos.
