Young climate activists camp out in front of the European Parliament

Around 80 students from the Occupy for Climate movement set up tents on the square in front of the European Parliament in Brussels on Saturday.
They were planning to spend the night there. The young activists wanted to convince those who are undecided to vote for a better climate policy. They staged their protest a few hours before people cast their vote.

The activists, from all corners of Europe, intended to spend the night in the shadow of the European Parliament. That’s not allowed because it is a neutral zone, but police said they would allow them to stay there until 8:30pm.

“We need to make sure we are seen. Statistically speaking, most people make their choice just before the elections. We have been striking in Europe for months and we will continue to strike”, said Luisa Neubauer, a 23-year-old German activist.

“Every voter in Europe has to understand their vote matters to the planet. It’s up to them now. We are also here to tell the new Parlaiment that the climate has to be priority number one. That’s what the Giec report said. This is the last European Parliament that will be able to keep global warming under 1.5 degrees”, the young woman said.
