Spain fined Belgium’s Prince Joachim €10,400 for breaching the country’s quarantine rules by attending a party in Córdoba last month, according to El País.
Joachim tested positive for the coronavirus in Belgium, after attending the party with at least 27 people.
Belgian media quoted the royal household at the time claiming that the prince had traveled to Spain for professional reasons, although Joachim’s girlfriend, Victoria Ortiz, is from the Andalusian city.
The royal household did not explain how Joachim was allowed to travel to Spain and participate in the gathering, despite Belgian rules banning citizens from going abroad and Spanish rules banning foreigners from entering the country, barring some exceptions.
Joachim, a nephew of Belgium’s King Philippe, apologized last month. “I deeply regret my actions,” he said in a statement, adding he would “accept the consequences.”
If he pays the fine within 15 days, it will be reduced by half.
Spain is among the worst affected countries in Europe by the outbreak, with over 27,000 deaths.
