First coronavirus vaccine expected in March: Belgian health minister

Sanofi’s coronavirus vaccine will likely be Belgium’s first vaccine and should be available starting in March, Health Minister Maggie De Block announced Thursday.

The shot, which is still under development, will be distributed in Belgium and the rest of the EU gradually, month by month, she said in a radio interview on La Première. Her comments follow the government’s announcement Wednesday that the country is relaxing some restrictions.

When asked who would get priority for the jab, De Block said it’ll likely first go to health workers and the more vulnerable, based on the recommendations of the country’s scientific advisory body for health.

As for the relaxation of rules announced on Wednesday, she said, they’re aimed at the long-term. She also defended herself from critics who attacked the decision.

“If measures are strict and they are not respected, it’s worse than having reasonable measures that are followed,” De Block explained.
