Antwerp mayor caught without trousers in new year interview

by editor

The mayor of Antwerp, Bart De Wever, kicked off 2021 in an embarrassing manner when he was called out for not wearing trousers during an interview on Saturday.

“You are wearing a very nice shirt, probably you donned it especially for us. But under that shirt, could it be that you are there in your underwear?” asked Radio 2 host Kim Debrie during the interview, which was also broadcast online.

De Wever, head of the separatist New Flemish Alliance (N-VA) party and one of the most powerful politicians in Belgium, made the mistake of doing the interview in front of a mirror, exposing his bare legs in the reflection.

“How can you know that?” asked De Wever after being caught out. “Damn, because I’m probably sitting in front of a mirror. I had not taken that into account. The year begins with a particularly embarrassing moment, I will remember this for a long time.”

The leader of French-speaking liberals Mouvement réformateur, Georges-Louis Bouchez, took to social media to offer De Wever a pair of shorts in the colors of the Belgian flag.
