Belgian health minister urges people to work from home amid COVID surge

As COVID-19 infections surge and hospital admissions rise, Belgian Health Minister Frank Vandenbroucke urged people “to get ready to work from home.”

There are 1,900 COVID patients in Belgian hospitals, with 360 in intensive care. This numbers are the highest they’ve been since June.

“We must act now … if this surge continues we will exceed the critical number of 500 people in intensive care, by all accounts a terrible scenario,” Vandenbroucke said on local radio show de Ochtend.

Vandenbroucke added, despite his message being a “disappointing” and “difficult” one, people have to be careful, wear masks and social distance.

He also pleaded with people to get the vaccine, and to “do so immediately.” While 86 percent of Belgian adults have now been fully vaccinated, the figure varies throughout the country, with only 67 percent jabbed in Brussels.

On October 21, Vandenbroucke announced that the coronavirus pandemic had entered its fourth wave. “Unfortunately, there will also be a steep increase in the number of hospital admissions. We are going to have to brace ourselves,” he warned.
