Six MEPs sanctioned for breach of EU health pass rules

Six MEPs were sanctioned for breaking the European Parliament’s health pass rules, which require anyone entering the building to show their EU Digital COVID Pass, Parliament President David Sassoli said at the plenary session in Strasbourg on Wednesday.

“Unfortunately, at this point [of the pandemic] … some colleagues have violated the COVID-19 pass rules to enter the Parliament building,” Sassoli said. “They are sanctioned because they entered the Parliament’s buildings without showing the EU COVID Pass.”

Sanctions range from a warning to a loss of seven days’ worth of daily allowance. The MEPs can appeal the decision.

Sassoli stressed that this was a serious offense — not only because it violates the rules, but because it endangers everyone present in the buildings.

Since November 3, anyone entering the Parliament’s buildings in Brussels, Luxembourg and Strasbourg must either show a valid EU Digital COVID Certificate or show proof of a negative PCR test carried out under 48 hours of entering the Parliament’s buildings in the three countries. Some MEPs expressed outrage at the measure in a letter sent to Sassoli in late October, which they feel undermines their fundamental rights.
