Belgian Prime Minister sets Christmas deadline for budget negotiations

by editor

BRUSSELS — On Thursday, Prime Minister Bart De Wever addressed the Belgian parliament, revealing that he has requested King Philippe grant the government until Christmas to finalize a budget agreement. The ruling coalition has been engaged in intense negotiations in an effort to solidify the nation’s budget and fulfill their commitment to implement €10 billion in spending cuts.

Urgent call for action

During his remarks, De Wever emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “Our situation can no longer tolerate procrastination.” He highlighted the necessity for the government to act decisively, asserting that they must not be immobilized by indecision. “We must take decisive action and show that this country is resilient. That is why I asked: ‘Sire, give me 50 days,’” he proclaimed.

Challenges and political pressure

However, De Wever made it clear that this deadline is non-negotiable: “I will say right away that this maximum period will not be extended.” Presently, the government faces significant challenges, including disputes over proposals to increase VAT and suspend the automatic wage indexation. These contentious issues have led to widespread public protests regarding the anticipated cuts.

Compounding the budgetary challenges, Belgium is under increasing pressure at the European level to approve a plan aimed at liberating €140 billion in frozen Russian assets, primarily managed by the Brussels-based financial firm Euroclear, to assist Ukraine. The political impasse regarding the budget coincides with crucial discussions scheduled for Friday between the European Commission and the Belgian government, aimed at resolving the ongoing deadlock.

The budget crisis has profound implications, as failure to reach an agreement could lead Belgium to rely on an emergency framework that permits monthly expenditures of one-twelfth of the upcoming year’s budget. As negotiations continue, the nation’s financial future hangs in the balance.
