Eurostar resumes services after Channel Tunnel disruption clears

by editor

BRUSSELS — Eurostar services connecting London with mainland Europe have returned to operation as of Wednesday, following significant disruptions caused by an incident in the Channel Tunnel that left numerous passengers stranded the previous day.

Details of the disruption

The issues began on Tuesday when a fault in the overhead power supply within the tunnel coincided with the failure of a Le Shuttle train, which normally transports both passengers and vehicles. This unfortunate combination blocked all routes through the tunnel, leading to extensive delays and the cancellation of many trains.

Furthermore, services on certain European routes, such as the Paris-Brussels line, were also affected due to the cascading delays. Passengers faced hours of uncertainty as they waited for updates on their travel plans.

Service restoration and passenger guidance

A spokesperson for Eurostar confirmed that operations would resume at approximately 7 p.m. Brussels time (6 p.m. London time) on Tuesday, following a “partial reopening of the Channel Tunnel.” Getlink, the managing company of the tunnel, stated that repairs to the power supply were ongoing throughout the night, which enabled rail traffic in both directions to commence early Wednesday, according to reports.

Eurostar apologized to passengers for the disruption and advised travelers to check their journeys before proceeding to the train stations.

As services began to normalize, Eurostar issued a caution regarding potential subsequent delays and last-minute cancellations on Wednesday. Passengers were strongly encouraged to reconsider their travel plans, particularly if they had received notifications of cancellations.
