Macron urges EU nations to prioritize European defense over American purchases

PARIS — French President Emmanuel Macron is initiating a proactive campaign aimed at persuading European Union nations to pivot away from purchasing U.S. defense equipment in favor of French and other European alternatives. This initiative marks a significant step in Macron’s long-standing advocacy for boosting defense spending within the EU context.

In recent remarks made during an interview with various French media outlets, including Nice-Matin and Le Parisien, Macron expressed his determination to change the minds of those European countries that have increasingly relied on American military hardware. He stated,

“My intention is to go and convince European states that have become accustomed to buying American.”

Elaborating on specific alternatives, Macron suggested that nations currently investing in U.S. systems, such as the Patriot missile defense system, should instead consider acquiring the Franco-Italian SAMP/T. Similarly, he pointed out that countries purchasing the F-35 fighter jet could be offered the Rafale as a viable option. He emphasized,

“That’s the way to increase the rate of production.”

Growing reliance on American defense systems

Macron’s appeal comes at a time when many European NATO members are more dependent on American-made weapons than ever before. Recently, both the Netherlands and Belgium affirmed their decisions to proceed with the acquisition of F-35 fighter jets. Meanwhile, Portugal is reconsidering its plans to replace its existing U.S.-made F-16 fighter jets with the more advanced F-35, citing concerns related to the current stance of the United States within the NATO framework.

In response to these challenges, Macron has instructed French defense manufacturers to streamline processes and reduce costs, making their offerings more appealing to potential buyers. This strategic move aims to enhance France’s competitiveness in the defense sector.

Support for Ukraine and military service reforms

Addressing the situation in Ukraine, Macron outlined a potential strategy for deploying European troops to support the country. He suggested the deployment of several thousand personnel from each nation at key locations to undertake training programs and demonstrate long-term solidarity.

Furthermore, Macron condemned the conditions proposed by Russian President Vladimir Putin for a ceasefire in Ukraine, labeling them as “unacceptable.” He stated,

“This would mean a partial invasion of Ukraine and a freeze on the conflict, without offering any security or guarantees for the future.”

Looking ahead, Macron also announced plans for a reform of the “Service National Universel,” a voluntary service program for youth aged 15 to 17, which encompasses athletic activities, civic education, and a contribution to state or non-governmental organizations. Nonetheless, he explicitly ruled out the reintroduction of mandatory military service.
