Zelenskyy to engage in talks with Macron amid Ukraine’s corruption issues

by editor

PARIS — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is set to visit Paris on Monday for critical discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron, as confirmed by the Elysée Palace. This meeting occurs at a pivotal time for Zelenskyy, whose administration is currently embroiled in a significant corruption scandal linked to allegations that associates of the president attempted to misappropriate approximately $100 million from Ukraine’s energy sector. This controversy unfolds as the nation grapples with severe blackouts due to ongoing Russian assaults on its infrastructure.

Focus on bilateral relations and security guarantees

The agenda for the meeting between Macron and Zelenskyy will encompass a range of topics, including bilateral relations, energy policies, economic strategies, and defense matters. As stated by the French presidency, this visit serves as a vital opportunity to “reaffirm France’s long-term commitment for Ukraine” and to “maintain the drive for security guarantees” that have been promised by the coalition of the willing led by France and Britain.

Ukraine seeks financial support amid budget challenges

The backdrop of this high-level meeting is the financial strain that Ukraine is experiencing, with the government facing a budget shortfall in the upcoming year. In its efforts to stabilize the economy, Ukraine is actively pursuing financial assistance from the European Union. Currently, Brussels is considering utilizing frozen Russian assets as a “reparation loan” for Ukraine, although it still needs to persuade Belgium, where a majority of these assets are located.

In response to the corruption allegations, presidential adviser Andriy Yermak defended Zelenskyy, asserting that the president is “not corrupt” and described him as a “very principled person” during an interview with the Axel Springer Global Reporters Network, which includes POLITICO.

Despite these claims, European Union allies are insisting on concrete assurances that Ukraine is implementing effective measures to combat corruption. Following a recent conversation with Zelenskyy, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized that Berlin anticipates “Ukraine to press ahead with anti-corruption measures and reforms.”
