Diplomatic tensions are escalating between the United States and Belgium following remarks from U.S. Ambassador Bill White regarding the Belgian government’s decision to prosecute two Jewish men for performing ritual circumcisions. The ambassador’s comments were made in response to a recommendation from the Antwerp prosecutor to bring charges against the practitioners, which has been framed as a violation of Belgian law requiring these procedures to be conducted by a licensed medical professional.
U.S. and Israeli officials react
Ambassador White expressed his disapproval on the social media platform X, labeling the judicial actions as “a shameful stain on Belgium.” He further asserted that such actions would lead to Belgium being viewed as antisemitic on the global stage. In a strong rebuke, he stated, “The Trump Administration condemns this judicial action,” criticizing what he termed “political inaction” by Belgian authorities in addressing the issue.
These sentiments were echoed by Israel’s Foreign Affairs Minister Gideon Sa’ar, who characterized the situation as “a scarlet letter on Belgian society.” The comments from both officials highlight a united front against the perceived threat to religious practices, particularly those of the Jewish community.
Belgium’s response and implications
In an immediate response, Belgium’s Foreign Affairs Minister Maxime Prévot urged restraint from U.S. officials, emphasizing the importance of respecting the legal processes of another nation. On X, he stated, “I urge you to exercise greater restraint and to view your role in its proper context,” criticizing the public disparagement of Belgium’s judicial proceedings.
“It is inappropriate to publicly criticize a country and tarnish its image simply because you disagree with judicial proceedings,”
Prévot defended the integrity of the legal actions, clarifying that they were initiated by “representatives of the Jewish community themselves,” and inviting Minister Sa’ar to engage in dialogue to clarify any misunderstandings, particularly since he had previously advised against using social media for diplomatic discussions.
This exchange further complicates the already strained diplomatic relations between Belgium and the United States, which had suffered earlier this year due to earlier criticisms from the U.S. ambassador regarding the same investigation. The Antwerp prosecutor has confirmed that sufficient evidence exists to charge the two men with intentional assault or battery against minors, as well as the unlawful practice of medicine. A decision on whether the case will proceed to trial is expected in June.
