In Washington, D.C., Europe’s right-wing populists are finding an unexpected welcome as they gather to participate in a three-day conference aimed at strengthening transatlantic ties. The event, hosted by GOP Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna, marks the launch of the Alliance of Sovereign Nations, a platform designed for like-minded European politicians to discuss key issues with their American counterparts.

Building connections across the Atlantic

The conference, which features a reception attended by self-identified European patriots, provides an opportunity for attendees to engage in discussions about energy, free speech, and immigration. Among the notable figures present will be Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, who serves as a significant figure in the Republican Party and is expected to attract considerable attention during the event.

Despite its low-profile speakers, including recent Romanian presidential candidate George Simion and several mid-ranking officials from countries such as Austria, Belgium, and Germany, the conference represents a chance for these European leaders to connect with their American allies during a time when populist sentiments are on the rise in Europe.

European leaders reflect on the MAGA influence

Simion emphasized the importance of the MAGA movement for Romanians, stating,

“The MAGA movement is extremely important for Romanians, especially for the conservative-patriotic side, those who identify with MAGA values and policies.”

He expressed his eagerness to reconnect with Johnson, whom he met during Donald Trump’s inauguration in 2025, referring to him as “one of our friends in Washington.”

Luna, who has established relationships with similar-minded lawmakers across Europe, commented on the importance of fostering dialogue on topics that resonate with both sides of the Atlantic. Her spokesperson noted that the conference aims to facilitate discussions on issues often overlooked by mainstream platforms, asserting the need for open dialogue regarding “growing concerns in Europe over censorship, political exclusion, and the narrowing of acceptable public debate.”

Furthermore, the event is positioned as a counter to traditional gatherings like the World Economic Forum, promoting participation from “normal” citizens in policy discussions that directly affect their lives.

As the gathering unfolds at the Fairmont hotel, it signals a continued effort to forge connections between the MAGA movement and European conservatives, suggesting that this transatlantic dialogue remains vibrant amid the broader political landscape.
