Early Monday morning, an explosion occurred at a synagogue in the Walloon city of Liège, leading officials to classify it as an act of antisemitism. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported as a result of the blast, although significant damage was inflicted on the building.

Government officials respond to the attack

Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever took to social media to express his condemnation of the incident, stating,

“Antisemitism is an attack on our values and our society, and we must fight it unequivocally. We stand in solidarity with the Jewish community in Liège and across the country.”

His remarks highlight the broader implications of such acts on societal cohesion.

Interior Minister Bernard Quintin characterized the explosion as an “abject antisemitic act” aimed at the Jewish community in Belgium. He assured the public that “security measures around similar sites will continue to be strengthened,” underlining the government’s commitment to ensuring safety.

Investigations and community reactions

The Belgian federal judicial police’s anti-terrorism unit, along with the federal prosecutor’s office, has launched an investigation into the incident. Local authorities are treating this situation with utmost seriousness, as it poses a significant threat to community safety.

A spokesperson for the mayor’s office in Liège stated that the municipal leadership condemned this violent act of antisemitism, which contradicts the city’s values of respect and tolerance. The spokesperson emphasized,

“There can be no question of importing external conflicts into our city.”

This statement reflects a strong commitment to maintaining harmony within the community.

According to reports, the explosion caused considerable damage, with local media noting that windows on the building’s front façade were blown out. The mayor’s office has indicated that a press briefing will be held later today to provide further details.

The attack also drew condemnation from Israel’s Ambassador to Belgium and Luxembourg, Idit Rosenzweig-Abu. Expressing her shock, she mentioned,

“I was shocked by the news of the attack in Liège. I am in touch with the community that is understandably shaken and terrified. I agree with PM De Wever who said that this is an attack on Belgian society as a whole.”

She further called for enhanced security measures for Jewish communities and a decisive stance against hate speech that incites violence.
