Von der Leyen: EU will host conference on illegal deportation of Ukrainian children to Russia

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen says the European Union will host a conference on the importance of securing the return of Ukrainian Children who had been taken to Russia illegally.

The International Criminal Court last week issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin for war crimes, accusing him of personal responsibility for the abductions of children from Ukraine.

Von der Leyen was speaking at a news conference, which was held after European Union leaders had met for a summit in Brussels.

“There’s one topic that is especially important to me, that is the case of abducted Ukrainian children,” von der Leyen says. “It is a horrible reminder of the darkest times of our history, what’s happening there to deport children. This is a war crime.”

EU leaders endorsed a plan for sending Ukraine one million rounds of artillery ammunition within the next 12 months to help the country counter Russia’s invasion forces.

Under the plan, the European Defense Agency will — in parallel with deliveries — aggregate requests from member states to restock, and lead a fast-track procedure for direct negotiations with industrial providers of ammunition in Europe.

Speaking alongside von der Leyen, European Council President Charles Michel said that the leaders also discussed the fight against climate change, the bloc’s competitiveness and its response to the €340 billion ($369 billion) US Inflation Reduction Act, as well as migration.
