The Spanish foreign ministry has officially designated Botswana as the safest country for travel throughout Africa. This announcement comes as part of Spain’s travel assessment map for 2025, which categorizes countries by their risk levels and offers guidance to citizens regarding travel restrictions.
Travel safety ratings across Africa
According to the newly released map, Botswana stands out as a secure option, contrasting sharply with nations like Sudan, which has been placed on the blacklist for being the most perilous destination. Alongside Sudan, Eritrea, the Central African Republic, and Somalia have also been flagged as high-risk areas to be avoided by travelers.
In addition to Botswana’s favorable rating, other countries such as South Africa, Cameroon, and Ivory Coast are listed in a danger zone, indicating that they should be approached with caution and are not recommended for travel.
Botswana’s reputation for safety and low corruption
Despite Botswana sharing borders with regions that experience occasional unrest, the nation has established itself as the safest country in southern Africa since achieving independence in 1966. Its consistent ranking as the least corrupt nation on the continent, according to Transparency International’s annual index, further solidifies its reputation as a secure travel destination.
“Botswana is placed alongside several European countries, as well as Japan and South Korea, as a destination with minimal risk of insecurity or terrorism,” the assessment indicates.
With a population of approximately 2.3 million, Botswana has managed to maintain a stable and secure environment, making it an increasingly attractive option for tourists and travelers seeking peace of mind while exploring Africa.
