A solemn procession took place in Cambodia, beginning at the nation’s primary religious school located near the Royal Palace, and culminating at a nearby temple. Here, monks, nuns, and laypeople gathered together to chant in honor of the soldiers who lost their lives in recent border clashes with Thailand.
Honoring the Fallen
During the ceremony, a board was prominently displayed, showcasing photographs of over 40 uniformed individuals. While the exact identity of these men remains unclear, it is uncertain whether all the images represented soldiers who were killed, or if they also included those who had been wounded or captured during the conflict.
Current Situation and Ceasefire
According to official reports, Cambodia has confirmed the death of only six troops in the five days of fighting that began on July 24. This conflict has been devastating, claiming dozens of lives and displacing over 260,000 individuals from both sides. Despite a ceasefire agreement reached on July 28, underlying tensions continue to simmer.
Furthermore, Thailand currently holds 18 captured Cambodian soldiers, indicating that their release will only occur once “active hostilities” have ceased. The situation remains delicate as both nations navigate the aftermath of the clashes.
