Catholic women honor Mary in unique Holy Week procession in Antigua

by editor

On Saturday, the streets of Antigua, Guatemala, were adorned with solemnity as Catholic women took center stage in a special Holy Week procession. They carried a revered statue of the Virgin of Solitude, symbolizing Mary’s mourning following the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

A departure from tradition

This year’s procession marked a significant departure from the customary Holy Week events in Antigua, which are traditionally led by men who carry heavy floats. Instead, the women, dressed in black cloaks rather than the usual purple robes, bore the sacred 18th-century statue through the historic heart of the town.

Reflecting on sorrow and devotion

The act of carrying the statue has been embraced as a blessing by many participants, as it allows them to share in the profound grief of Mary. This unique procession not only reflects the themes of sorrow and devotion central to Holy Week but also highlights the important role of women in the religious and cultural practices of the community.

“This event allows us to connect more deeply with our faith and traditions,” said one of the participants.

The streets came alive with reverence and reflection, as the women carried the image from the Church of La Merced, fostering a sense of unity and spiritual contemplation among the onlookers.
