China criticizes UK for further delaying massive embassy decision in London

On December 3, 2025, China expressed its discontent with the UK government following yet another postponement regarding the construction of a significant embassy in London. The British authorities announced on Tuesday that the anticipated decision, originally scheduled for December 10, has been deferred to January 20 due to escalating security concerns.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian voiced strong objections, stating, “The UK’s repeated delay in granting approval is completely unjustified and the reasons they cited are untenable.” He further emphasized that the Chinese government is “strongly dissatisfied” with the situation.

Delays and security concerns

The proposed embassy, situated at Royal Mint Court near the iconic Tower of London, is designed to become the largest diplomatic facility in Europe, spanning an impressive 20,000 square meters. However, plans for its construction have faced significant holdups over the years, primarily due to concerns about potential espionage.

Lawmakers from various political factions have raised alarms regarding the building’s purpose and have urged the government to reject the proposal outright. In response to the delays, Tom Wells, a spokesperson for Prime Minister Keir Starmer, noted that the decision was postponed to allow for thorough consideration of security implications. “The Home Office and Foreign Office have provided views on particular security implications, and have been clear throughout that a decision shouldn’t be taken until we affirm that those considerations have been completed or resolved,” Wells stated.

Political implications of the delay

Some critics speculate that the postponement is strategically timed, coinciding with preparations for Starmer’s expected visit to Beijing early next year. This raises questions about the influence of diplomatic relations on national security decisions.

As discussions continue, the fate of the proposed embassy remains uncertain, with both local and international stakeholders keeping a close eye on developments.
